Delhi to become a MICE destination of a global scale – After completion of IICC at Dwarka and Pragati Maidan redevelopment


15 April 2020 : After completion of International Convention & Expo Centre (IICC) at Dwarka and Pragati Maidan redevelopment projects, New Delhi will become a MICE destination of a global scale, said Amitabh Kant, CEO, Niti Aayog who is also a Director of IICC. He was speaking to officials and media during his recent visit to IICC for a review of the project.

He said that the Government has embarked on creating two global scale venues for the Indian MICE sector, as there is a vast opportunity for MICE tourism in India. The new IICC project coming up at Dwarka is about five minutes from the airport. It is being built with an aim to create one of the biggest exhibition and convention centres in the world. Besides IICC, Pragati Maidan is being redeveloped to transform it into a global scale venue.

IICC will be an iconic venue and will be the largest in Southeast Asia. The project is expected to be ready within a year as almost 50 per cent of the work is already completed. There will be 14+ hotels; a large-scale shopping and commercial development; two Delhi Metro lines will be connected to IICC, in addition to widening of roads leading to the venue. The Government has given about 350 acre of land for the IICC project.

As reported in EVNA, IICC involves more than Rs.26,000 crore investment. It is a smart city project being driven by Government of India. With a total area of 300,000m2, IICC is India’s largest convention and exhibition complex. IICC has five large exhibition halls, a multi-purpose convention centre, the largest auditorium in India capable of holding 10,000 people at one time, as well as multi-arena facilities for 6,000 people. With cutting edge parking facilities capable of accommodating 34,808 vehicles.(Indoor 28,608, Outdoor 6,200). IICC, unlike other convention and exhibition facilities, will be able to host events without any traffic congestion. And KINTEX (Korea International Exhibition & Convention Centre) is fully gearing up to make a big start at IICC and impress the Indian /Global exhibition industry at large once the project is completed.

Meanwhile, Amitabh Kant, has urged all other States to develop MICE tourism and create global scale MICE infrastructure.
